Understanding Pediatric Dental Sedation

Our Comprehensive Sedation Options

A child receiving oral conscious sedation in Weatherford.Nitrous Oxide: Gentle Relaxation

Nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) is a gentle way for children with mild anxiety to stay relaxed during dental procedures. This safe, mild sedative is mixed with oxygen and breathed in through a small nose mask. Your child will feel drowsy and calm, but the effects wear off quickly, so they can return to normal activities shortly after their appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation: Deep Relaxation

Dr. Boling offers oral conscious sedation for children who need deeper relaxation. This option helps children who feel anxious or need longer procedures remain calm and cooperative. The medication is taken by mouth before the appointment. Your child will remain awake but deeply relaxed throughout the procedure.

In-Office General Anesthesia: Complete Comfort

For more complex procedures or children requiring deep sedation, we partner with dental anesthesiologists specializing in pediatric dental care. Your child will sleep through the procedure, and the anesthesiologist will carefully monitor their vital signs before, during, and after treatment, ensuring a safe experience.

Testimonial

If anyone out there needs a dentist PLEASE reach out to them.

This is a great place to go. My youngest son had dental surgery when he was really young and they did great. They recently did some more work on him and as always they did great. My kid is comfortable with them, the staff members and Dr. Boiling are wonderful with their clients. I live between Azle and Lake Worth and I will drive to Weatherford for him to be seen by them. If anyone out there needs a dentist PLEASE reach out to them.

Frequently Asked Questions

A child giving a thumbs-up at the dentistYour child's safety starts with careful planning. Dr. Boling will review your child's medical history and discuss any concerns. For general anesthesia, you'll meet with our board-certified anesthesiologist to create a personalized sedation plan.

Preparing for Dental Sedation

Follow these important safety guidelines:

  • No food or drink after midnight the night before (including water)
  • Dress your child in loose, comfortable clothing
  • Bring a favorite comfort item (blanket or stuffed animal)
  • Plan for an adult to stay with your child for the rest of the day

During the Dental Procedure

Our team monitors your child throughout the procedure. For in-office general anesthesia, a trained specialist stays with your child at all times to continuously monitor their breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels. Depending on the treatment needed, most procedures take one to two hours.

Recovery and Going Home

Your child will wake up in our recovery area with our team watching closely. They might feel sleepy or dizzy for several hours. We'll ensure they're stable before sending them home with detailed care instructions.

  • Let your child rest quietly at home
  • Start with clear liquids, then soft foods when ready
  • Give medicines as directed by Dr. Boling
  • Watch for fever or unusual discomfort
  • Keep your child from active play or sports

Sedation Dentistry Technology

A child getting nitrous oxide sedation in Weatherford

Nitrous Oxide or "Laughing Gas"

Also known as "laughing gas," nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that helps anxious children feel relaxed during dental procedures. It's one of the safest forms of sedation, taking effect quickly when breathed through a small nose mask and wearing off just as fast when treatment is done.

Dr. Boling uses nitrous oxide for procedures like fillings or cleanings when children need extra help staying calm. Your child will remain awake and able to respond to questions, but they will feel more comfortable and less anxious. They may have little to no memory of what happened during their appointment.
