When it comes to your child’s oral health, you want the very best. By providing them with a stable foundation when they’re young, they have a better chance of enjoying a healthy, beautiful smile for a lifetime.
But during this busy holiday season, it’s easy to push dental care aside; you’re busy with family gatherings and school programs, and your to-do list seems endless.
At Lonestar Smiles for Kids, we understand that there are never enough hours in the day, but we’d like to remind you that your child may have valuable unused dental benefits.
Your Child’s Dental Insurance: What You Need to Know
Your child’s dental insurance probably resets at the end of the year, so any unused benefits must be used before December 31.
Here’s how most dental insurance works:
- You pay a monthly premium for your child’s dental coverage.
- You are responsible for the deductible, the amount you must pay before your insurance company begins to pay for part or all of the covered dental expenses.
- You probably have a maximum allowance for the year, which is the most your insurance will pay for the year.
How to Save Money Before December 31
There are some easy ways to maximize your child’s dental insurance coverage before the end of the year, so you don’t lose any valuable benefits:
- Schedule preventive care — Most dental insurance pays 100% for routine preventive care, including exams, cleanings, x-rays, fluoride, and sealants. These services are not subject to the deductible.
- Ask about restorations — If your child needs fillings, crowns, or other dental restorations, try to take advantage of the maximum allowance for 2025. If the procedure requires more than one visit, you may be able to schedule part of the treatment in 2025 and the other part in 2026.
- Check your plan’s coverage — Contact our dental office to learn more about your available coverage and when your child’s last checkup was; this can help you plan accordingly.
- Make 2026 appointments — It’s not too early to schedule your child’s preventive visits for next year; this ensures you get the best appointment times for your busy lifestyle.
