Sedation dentistry can be an ideal way for anxious or special needs children to get the treatment they need. At Lone Start Smiles for Kids, we understand that parents have questions and possible concerns about dental sedation, and we're prepared to provide answers so you can make an informed decision about your child's treatment.

Here are some common questions we hear from parents, along with what you should know about sedation dentistry for kids in Weatherford.

#1 What Types of Dental Sedation Do You Offer?

At Lone Star Smiles for Kids, we offer various types of sedation options tailored to your child's unique needs.

  • Laughing Gas — Also known as nitrous oxide, laughing gas is the mildest sedation we offer, delivered through an inhalation mask worn during treatment. It works quickly to provide relaxation and also leaves your child's system soon after treatment is completed.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation — Delivered through medication prescribed by our dentist, taken by your child one hour prior to their procedure. This is a deeper level of sedation with amnesic effects and the feeling of sleeping, though your child is still responsive.
  • In-Office General Anesthesia — We partner with an anesthesiologist, who delivers the medication intravenously. They carefully monitor your child's vital signs throughout their treatment.

#2 Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for My Child?

Yes! Dental sedation is safe for children and provides them with a way to receive the necessary dentistry in a comfortable and barrier-free manner.

#3 How Is My Child Monitored During Dental Sedation?

Depending on which type of sedation you choose for your child's needs, they will be constantly monitored throughout their procedure by a team member or an anesthesiologist.

#4 What Are the Potential Risks of Sedation Dentistry?

The most considerable risk of dental sedation is reactions or side effects from the medication, such as:

  • Nausea
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry Mouth
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

#5 What Should I Expect for My Child's Recovery?

Laughing gas typically does not leave children with lingering side effects, and they can return to their normal activities immediately. Due to the nature of the medication, oral sedation and general anesthesia require rest and time off from activities to fully recover.
